This Privacy Policy describes how we handle Personal Information that we collect through:

  • This website (“the Site”), the software applications made available by us for use on or through computers, mobile devices or other Internet-connected devices (the “Apps”), our social media pages set forth in the links in the footer on demeraramutual.com (our “Social Media Pages “) ( collectively, including the Site, the Apps and our Social Media Pages, referred to as the ‘Demerara Mutual On-line Services”); and
  • other means ( for example, from your application and claims forms, telephone calls, e-mails and other communications with us, as well as from claims investigators, medical professionals, witnesses or other third parties involved in our business dealings with you).

The types of personal information we may collect (directly from you or third parties) depend on the nature of the relationship that you have with Demerara Mutual. Regardless of the source, we only collect information relevant for the purposes of processing information to which you have consented, except where required by law, to protect the interests of Demerara Mutual or in the discharge of public duty.

SHARING OF PERSONAL INFORMATION:

Demerara Mutual (DM) may make Personal Information available to:

  • Other insurance and distribution parties
    In the course of marketing and providing insurance and processing claims, DM may make Personal Information available to third parties such as other insurers; reinsurers; insurance and reinsurance brokers and other intermediaries and agents; appointed representatives; distributors; insurance administration software service providers; and financial institutions, securities firms and other business partners.
  • Our service providers
    External third-party service providers, such as medical professionals, accountants, actuaries, auditors, experts, lawyers and other outside professional advisors; travel and medical assistance providers; call center service providers; IT systems, support and hosting service providers; printing, advertising, marketing and market research and analysis service providers; banks and financial institutions that service our accounts; third-party claim administrators; document and records management providers; claim investigators and adjusters; construction consultants; engineers; examiners; and similar third-party vendors and outsourced service providers that assist us in carrying out business activities.
  • Providers of Internet-connected devices and associated software
    DM may make the Personal Information you provide to us via our Apps available to providers of Internet-connected devices and/or associated operating systems and/or software as set forth in the terms of use and/or privacy policies you agree to with those providers
  • Governmental authorities and third parties involved in court action
    DM may also share Personal Information with governmental or other public authorities (including, but not limited to, workers’ compensation boards, courts, law enforcement, tax authorities and criminal investigations agencies); and third-party civil legal process participants and their accountants, auditors, lawyers and other advisors and representatives as we believe to be necessary or appropriate: (a) to comply with applicable law, including laws outside your country of residence; (b) to comply with legal process; (c) to respond to requests from public and government authorities including public and government authorities outside your country of residence; (d) to enforce our terms and conditions; (e) to protect our operations ; (f) to protect our rights, privacy, safety or property, and/or that of , you or others; and (g) to allow us to pursue available remedies or limit our damages.

    We may share Personal Information with payees; emergency providers (fire, police and medical emergency services); retailers; medical networks, organizations and providers; travel carriers; credit bureaus; credit reporting agencies; and other people involved in an incident that is the subject of a claim; as well as purchasers and prospective purchasers or other parties in any actual or proposed reorganization, merger, sale, joint venture, assignment, transfer or other transaction relating to all or any portion of our business, or assets.  

Personal Information may also be shared by you, on message boards, chat, profile pages and blogs, and other services to which you are able to post information and materials (including, without limitation, our Social Media Pages and Apps). Please note that any information you post or disclose through these services will become public information, and may be available to visitors who access the DM On-line Services and to the general public. We urge you to be very careful when deciding to disclose your Personal Information, or any other information, on the DM On-line Services.

Your information may be used to contact you on updates to our services or privacy policy as well as updates to your particular policies by authorised personnel of Demerara Mutual. Should you wish to opt-out from receiving such emails, an option will be available from within your Secured Area.

YOUR ACCESS AND CONTROL OVER INFORMATION:

You may opt out of any future contacts from us at any time. You can do the following at any time by contacting us via the email address or phone number given on our website:

  • See what data we have about you, if any.
  • Change/correct any data we have about you.
  • Have us delete any data we have about you.
  • Express any concern you have about our use of your data.Please note that if you have an active policy with Demerara Mutual and you wish for the information contained within the policy to be purged from the system, the policy will have to be cancelled. You are free to request cancellation and any refunds or reimbursements will be solely dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Security:

We take precautions to protect your information. When you submit sensitive information via the website, your information is protected both online and offline. Wherever we collect sensitive information (such as credit card data), that information is encrypted and transmitted to us in a secure way. You can verify this by looking for a closed lock icon at the bottom of your web browser, or looking for “https” at the beginning of the address of the web page.

While we use encryption to protect sensitive information transmitted online, we also protect your information offline. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, billing or customer service) are granted access to personally identifiable information. The computers/servers in which we store personally identifiable information are kept in a secure environment.

Please also note that the repository of information under the control of Demerara Mutual does not store any credit card (or other payment service) information. Credit card processing is done by our Merchant gateway (PayPal) who is solely responsible for storing credit card information for processing purposes.

SAFEGUARDING YOUR INFORMATION:

 Demerara Mutual  has security practices and procedures in place to prevent unauthorized access to your nonpublic personal information. Our practices of safeguarding your information help protect against the criminal use of the information. Demerara Mutual administrative, technical and physical safeguards are designed to protect personal information that is received against accidental, unlawful or unauthorized destruction, loss, alteration, access, disclosure or use.

Our employees receive training, are bound by a Confidentiality Agreement requiring that all information be kept in strict confidence, and they are subject to disciplinary action for violation of the Agreement. We restrict access to information about you to only those employees who need to know that information to perform their job. We maintain physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards, which comply with local laws and regulations to guard your information.

RETENTION OF YOUR INFORMATION:

We will only retain your personal information as long as it is necessary or as required by law. When we destroy the information, we will use safeguards to prevent unauthorized parties from gaining access to the information during the process.
